The changes taking place in South Asian cities are th focus of a major conference in Lahore next year, for which proposals for paper are now invited. The organisers make the point that much urban research has focused on Europe and North America, while the dramatic urbanisation of South Asia has received much less attention.
The call for the submission of abstarcts says „Not only are older cities expanding and evolving; there is also a rapid increase in small and medium-sized cities along with the development of new urban forms such as ‘urban corridors’ along with attempts to adopt the ‘world class’ and ‘smart’ city as models of development.“
Abstracts are due in by 1 September. Possible themes for the conference have been identified:
- Resource politics and the city
- Privatization, enclosures and the disappearance of the urban commons
- The ‘world class/smart city’ and its exclusions
- Migration/transnationalism and the city
- Silenced/alternative urban histories
- Insecurity/conflict/violence and the city
- Gendered urban spaces
- Right to the city movements
- Cosmopolitanism and the city
- Writing the South Asian city
