Are you interested in a 12 month job, working on sustainable cities and human settlements, with opportunities for interenational travel? 2020 is going to be an important year. In February the 10th World Urban Forum will be convened by UN-Habitat in Abu Dhabi. There will also be a Commonwealth Local Government Forum conference in Asia, and in June the Commonwealth Heads of  Government will be meeting in Rwanda. These present unique opportunities to advance the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements agenda within the Commonwealth. To this end the Commonwealth Association of Planners, the Commonwealth Association of Architects, the Commonwealth Local Goverenment Forum and the Prince’s Foundation are working together on a range of closely interrelated projects. They are seeing to employ a co-ordinator to take forward their endeavours.

The job is 4 days a week and desk space will be provided in the Prince’s Foundation London office. The full details read as follows:

This is an excellent and unique opportunity to get involved in the delivery of key projects in the lead up to the World Urban Forum to be held in Abu Dhabi in February 2020, the CLGF Conference 2020 and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda in June 2020.

1. Role summary

 The Commonwealth Association of Planners, Commonwealth Local Government Forum, Commonwealth Association of Architects and The Prince’s Foundation are working collaboratively in pursuing a number of interconnected initiatives related to sustainable cities and human settlements in the Commonwealth. The outputs from these initiatives will contribute to discussions at the World Urban Forum in February 2020, CHOGM June 2020 and at other events. There will also be a range of follow up and implementation actions arising from the initiatives.

The appointed Projects Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the key activities by the sponsor organisations, including day-to-day coordination where necessary, to ensure the overall objectives are achieved within agreed timescales and budgets. The Coordinator will report on a regular basis to a Project Steering Group composed of representatives of the four sponsor organisations.

The Coordinator will be expected to work up to 4 days /week (7.5 hours / day) through to October 2020 (excluding holidays), including the potential for periods of international travel within that timeframe. A desk space will be provided at The Prince’s Foundation offices at 19-22 Charlotte Road, EC2A 3SG. Home working may be possible, if appropriate, for part of the week.

2. Key tasks

  Support the completion, analysis, write up, publication and promotion of the surveys. (For information see results of earlier surveys of Planning and Architecture professions.)

 Support The Prince’s Foundation in coordinating the completion of the Pilot study stage of the Toolkit in the city of Bo, Sierra Leone, including close liaison with the in-country project coordinator and conducting a final evaluation of the project and process. Coordinate logistics for testing of the Toolkit at a number of regional workshops in the Commonwealth including potentially in Ghana and Pakistan.

Manage revisions and publication of the Toolkit following the Pilot testing.

 Working closely with the sponsor organisations and academic partners to support the development of a free access on-line training module derived from the Toolkit.

 Contribute to arrangements for events related to the above tasks at WUF, CLGF Conference and CHOGM.

 Completion of other tasks as specified by the Project Steering Group.

3. Required Skills / Qualifications

• Qualified to degree level with interests in cities and urban development internationally.

• Understanding of the Commonwealth and its values.

• Demonstrable experience of successful project management and project delivery including budget management and working with a number of different partners.

• Experience of project monitoring and evaluation.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills including report writing.

• Demonstrable ability to achieve results with limited supervision.

• Ability and willingness to travel internationally

4. Employment Contract and Remuneration

The person appointed will be expected to work on a freelance or contracted self-employed basis, responsible for looking after their own tax and NI contributions. Remuneration will be made on a monthly basis in arrears by bank transfer on submission of a fee invoice from the contractor and based on a day rate to be agreed (7.5 hours / day). It is anticipated that remuneration will be within the range of £100 – £150 / day depending on experience although variations outside this range may be considered.

  • Curriculum Vitae (2 pages max) with a supporting statement (2 pages max) demonstrating suitability for the role, focussing on the project focus, required skills and qualifications set out above.
  • References – names and contact details of 2 people we can approach.
  • Fees: your professional fees for undertaking the work as set out above expressed as a day rate assuming a 7.5 hour day.
  • Confirmation of availability up to 4 days / week through to end of October 2020 – excluding any periods that the contractor expects to be unavailable for work, to be agreed in advance.
  • Date on which you could take up the post if successful bearing in mind that the sponsors would like the appointed person to start as soon as possible.
  • Confirmation of ability and willingness to undertake international travel
